How to Prep for Long Shifts (10+)

The medical field often requires that people work long hours. It can be difficult for you to get through a long shift. However, you can take the following steps to prepare for your shift.

Get Enough Rest

You need energy to get through your shift. Getting the proper amount of sleep will ensure that you have enough energy to get through your shift. Regardless of whether you work the night shift or day shift, you should try to get six to eight hours of sleep before you start working.

Pack Enough Snacks

A healthy snack can give you an energy burst. You may have access to a vending machine at your job. However, it is best for you to pack your own healthy snacks. Unhealthy snacks can give you a temporary energy burst, but you will feel sluggish shortly after.

The snacks that you pack should be filled with protein. A good snack for you to pack is an apple with peanut butter. You can also try a banana and Greek yogurt.

Have Your Outfit Ready

You may be in a rush to get out the door so that you can get to work on time. You can get ready in less time by having your outfit ready ahead of time. You should iron your mens scrubs the night before and have them laid out. You should also have everything else that you need to work laid out ahead of time, such as your badge, name tag, hand lotion and equipment.

Ask for Help

You may have a long list of things that you have to take care of before your shift starts. Trying to get everything done at one time can cause you to experience a significant amount of stress. That is why you should ask for help. Ask your family members and friends to help you run errands. You should also not hesitate to put off something that can wait until tomorrow.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

It is important for you to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated not only helps you stay healthy, but is also gives you energy. If you want to add a little flavor to your water, then you can squeeze lemon into it.

Many people drink coffee to get through their shift. However, if you stay hydrated, then you may find that you do not have to drink coffee. It is also important to note that coffee can dehydrate you.

Exercise

Exercising may be the last thing that you want to do if you are working long hours. However, it is one of the best things that you can do for your mental and physical health. It can also give the strength and energy that you need to work a long shift. You may have to change the way that you exercise.

For example, if you do not have the time to go to the gym, then you can work out at home. You can also take a short walk or do a yoga routine.
